New England Steam Corporation

New England Steam Corporation (NESCO) was formed in 2013, specifically to preserve, restore and operate former Maine central steam locomotive 470. The locomotive had a 30 year career pulling notable trains between Boston and Bangor, and was the last steam locomotive to operate on the railroad on June 13, 1954. It stood as a park feature in Waterville, Maine, until deterioration caused the city to find it another home. After purchasing the locomotive, NESCO moved it to Washington Junction yard in Hancock, home of the Downeast Scenic Railroad, where it is being restored to operational condition.

NESCO's three objectives are Preservation, Education, and Heritage Tourism. Maine Central 470 is the largest steam locomotive remaining in the New England states and Maritime Canada. Once restored to operation, it will draw thousands of new visitors to the greater Ellsworth region, benefitting hotels, restaurants, campgrounds, and other regional attractions.

New England Steam Corporation is a separate organization from the Downeast Scenic Railroad, but the organizations are cooperative partners, both focused on railroad heritage in eastern Maine.
