Castine Historical Society

The Castine Historical Society, located in the Abbott School and Samuel P. Grindle House on Castine’s historic and picturesque town common, serves as a window into Castine’s extraordinary past. Through its seasonal permanent and changing exhibitions, lectures, and town walking tours,the Historical Society brings this unique town's history alive.

Free changing exhibitions are located in the 1859 Abbott School that is open June 5 – October 9, 2023. Hours are Monday - Saturday, 10-4, Sunday 1-4 through Labor Day. Fall hours are Friday, Saturday, and Monday, 10-4, Sunday 1-4  Free walking tours of historic Castine are offered June 23 – October 9, Friday, Saturday, and Monday at 10:00. Next door is the Historical Society’s restored c. 1850 Grindle House open year-round by appointment for researchers wishing to access the Historical Society’s vast collection of photographs, documents, artifacts, maps, essays, research notes, books, publications and paintings related to Castine and the Bagaduce River area.
